General Overview[ | ]

When factions are procedurally generated, they are each assigned a series of specific traits. Each of these traits will affect how the faction operates.

Expressed power of each trait can vary between factions on the scale of Very > Normal (default) > Somewhat. Depending on the power of the trait, not all of the effects of this trait can be manifested. Generally, traits define values and behavior of a faction. Knowing them is helpful when gaining trust and forging alliances as well as in wars.

Traits influence the decision making by the faction for requesting assistance with the final Xsotan fight.

Note: The mistrustful trait and its higher negotiation demand, as well as the opposite trusting, has no effect on higher difficulties (veteran+) as all of them require 95000 and thus excellent relations to even begin. The real challenge is the lower starting reputation in those cases and most of the trait can be ignored. The alliance will however still break faster if they are angered by seizing territory or bad flightmanship.

The most important traits are aggressive/peaceful as those are the main reason for starting relations and those that mayhaps grant trade and smuggling benefits, including how heavily armed the victims are.

Aggressive[ | ]

Contrasted to peaceful.

  • Tend to send more reinforcements when supporting allies (25%)
  • Less loss of reputation when attacked (75%)
  • Greater increase in reputation when trading weapons (75%)
  • Increased cost when negotiating ceasefires and alliances (75%)
  • Chance of wars with neighboring factions (100%)

Aggressive factions will sometimes invade enemy sectors. Player starts off with lowered relations to aggressive factions.

Peaceful[ | ]

Contrasted to aggressive.

  • Tend to send fewer reinforcements when supporting allies (25%)
  • Less cost when negotiating ceasefires and alliances (25%)
  • Much greater loss of reputation when attacked (75%)
  • Much greater increase in reputation through combat support (75%)
  • Greater increase in reputation by commerce (exception: weapons) & tribute (75%)

Opportunistic[ | ]

Contrasted to honorable.

  • More patience during negotiations (25%)
  • Less reputation loss when witnessing attacks on helpless ships (25%)
  • Less reputation loss for doing something illegal (75%)
  • Increased cost for tribute, negotiating alliances and ceasefires (75%)
  • No reputation loss when witnessing attacks on helpless ships (100%)

Honorable[ | ]

Contrasted to opportunistic.

  • Less patience during negotiations (25%)
  • Tend to send more reinforcements when supporting allies (25%)
  • Greater loss of reputation when witnessing attacks on helpless ships (25%)
  • Greater loss of reputation when doing something illegal (75%)

Careful[ | ]

Contrasted to brave.

  • Increased range when scanning cargo transports (25%)
  • Military ships are more heavily armed (25%)
  • Stronger security on ships (25%)
  • Greater loss of reputation when attacked (50%)

Factions with this trait are more suspicious and will be able to detect illegal cargo from 50% further away.

Brave[ | ]

Contrasted to careful.

  • Send more reinforcements when supporting allies (25%)
  • Less increase in reputation by commerce (50%)

Greedy[ | ]

Contrasted to generous.

  • Higher fines when doing something illegal (25%)
  • Less patience during negotiations (25%)
  • Greater increase in reputation by commerce and tribute (75%)
  • Increased cost when negotiating ceasefires and alliances (75%)

Factions with this trait will fine on the average 50% more.

Generous[ | ]

Contrasted to greedy.

  • Lower fines and less reputation loss for doing something illegal (25%)
  • More patience during negotiations (25%)
  • Lowered cost for tribute and when negotiating alliances (75%)

Mistrustful[ | ]

Contrasted to trusting.

  • Decreased willingness to negotiate (25%)
  • Alliance negotiations require more reputation than usual (25%)
  • Treaties are terminated earlier when relations worsen (25%)
  • Greater loss of reputation when doing something illegal (75%)
  • Lower increase in reputation through tribute (75%)

Trusting[ | ]

Contrasted to mistrustful.

  • Alliance negotiations require less reputation than usual (25%)
  • Treaties are terminated later when relations worsen (25%)

The only trait to give all its few benefits at 25%.
